EPA: Treatment begins at CTS of Asheville Superfund Site

WLOS TV-13 (Asheville, NC)
June 8, 2018

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — According to an EPA press release, treatment is underway to clean up contaminants in the groundwater and soil at the CTS of Asheville, Inc. Superfund Site.

Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) is being used to treat a 1.2-acre area beneath the former CTS plant. The system will operate through the fall of 2018 designed to extract 95 percent of the trichloroethene (TCE) in the treatment area, removing an estimated 20,000 pounds of pollutants.“I am pleased to announce the start of this aggressive treatment to clean up a portion of the CTS Site,” said EPA Region 4 Administrator Trey Glenn. “The treatment will remove contaminants, helping to protect people’s health and the environment in the surrounding area.”

“Cleaning up these sites requires hard work to both identify contamination and then determine how to improve it,” said North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Secretary Michael S. Regan. “I am proud of DEQ’s hard work and partnership with EPA Region 4 to do this critical work well as a part of our mission to protect all North Carolinians and be good stewards of our environment.”

Historical use of solvents in the manufacturing of electronic components contaminated the CTS Site with TCE. The area being treated also contains non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) from weathered fuel oil.
