Cleanup at former CTS site put on hold in August

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Cleanup at a local Superfund site was halted for maintenance.

According to the EPA, the process to remove TCE, a carcinogen, from the CTS Superfund site was halted for 17 days from August 7th through the 24th for maintenance.
The maintenance of the Electrical Resistance Heating or ERH treatment system was required due to the high water table following heavy periods of rainfall this spring/summer, which affected the vapor extraction wells. According to the EPA, the wells are installed directly above the water table to remove the volatilized TCE from the boiling groundwater below. Because the water table was so high, the bottoms of these extraction wells were sitting in the water table vs. above the water table and were pulling out non-aqueous phase liquid in addition to vapor. This, , required components of the above-ground treatment equipment to be cleaned. The ERH treatment is still expected to be completed on schedule sometime this fall.
