Sporlan Valve plant in Washington, Mo., could be added to Superfund toxic sites By Blythe Bernhard St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) September 11, 2018 The former Sporlan Valve plant in Washington, Mo., where cancer-causing chemicals leached into the groundwater and soil, is expected to be added to a federal list of toxic sites slated for cleanup. … The site of the former Sporlan Valve Company sits on four acres of vacant land at 611 East 7th Street in Washington, about half a mile from the Missouri River. The company, once the largest U.S. maker of air conditioning and refrigeration valves, was bought by Parker Hannifin Corp. of Cleveland in 2004 and demolished in 2011. The plant used trichloroethylene (TCE) as a solvent in the manufacturing process for decades. The soil and groundwater under the facility became contaminated with TCE, which can damage the nervous system and is a potential cause of cancer.
