DEC: Homer Street brownfield clean By BOB CLARK Olean Times Herald (NY) December 21, 2018 OLEAN - Another site in North Olean has been cleaned up, state regulators reported. The brownfield cleanup efforts 3.34-acre lot at 229 Homer St. has been completed, the state Department of Environmental Conservation reported Wednesday. From the 1880s through 1954, the site was used for oil refining - the final owner was Socony-Vacuum, a predecessor of ExxonMobil. While the buildings and tanks were removed in 1964, testing showed major contamination below ground. Along with almost half a mile of subterranean refinery piping, chemicals found in the soil include arsenic, lead, old petroleum products, and several hydrocarbons from the refining process that are known carcinogens.
