Hancock tannery cleanup progressing

HANCOCK - Progress continues to be made in efforts to clean up contamination at the site of a former tannery in Hancock.

The Hancock Ellsworth Tannery opened in the 1950s on a 153-acre tract of land near the Tideway Market along Route 1. It operated as a tannery until its closure in the late 1960s. The building, which measures 71,370 square feet, has been abandoned since the 1990s.

In 2014, the town foreclosed on the property for unpaid taxes. In order to be able to sell the property and get it back on the tax rolls, cleanup was required.

“Ecological concerns weren’t given to the disposal of things like they are today,” said Hancock Selectman Randy Ewins, who is managing the cleanup for the town.
