Oakland high school closes after carcinogenic chemical found in groundwater By Amanda Bartlett San Francisco Chronicle (CA) February 20, 2020 Students and staff at McClymonds High School in Oakland were told not to come to class Thursday morning after a cancer-causing chemical called trichloroethylene (TCE) was found in the onsite groundwater. School won’t be in session for the remainder of the week, according to spokesman John Sasaki. Teachers and students were notified of the temporary closure on Wednesday night, and district officials are currently building a plan for next week as they seek out an alternate location for classes to be held. Sasaki told SFGATE the district had removed a fuel tank that was being used to heat the school’s swimming pool earlier last year. In the fall, they completed additional testing of the soil and groundwater to determine there had been no petroleum seepage.
