EPA finishes work at former Tonawanda Coke site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday that it has completed its work at the former Tonawanda Coke site and has handed oversight of the property over to New York State.

The EPA began its response at the River Road property shortly after Tonawanda Coke shut down in October 2018.

The agency secured the plant, including emptying the coke ovens; monitoring the air in the surrounding neighborhood; and overseeing the removal of tens of thousands of tons of coal and coke and a million gallons of contaminated wastewater.
