Historic Rochester grain elevator site slated for redevelopment, brownfield cleanup

The city of Rochester will be receiving $1 million from the state to help clean up ground contamination on the site of the historic Rochester grain elevator.

Located at 303 E. University St., the 140-year-old grain elevator and the property it sits on have been under contract for purchase by developers Frank Rewold & Sons since this summer. The company, in tandem with city administration, submitted a grant application for the funds to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy earlier this year to transform the site into an office building.

At a recent city council meeting, a resolution was passed to accept the grant funding. A separate resolution was also passed stating the council’s intent to preserve the historic portions of the grain elevator building, either where it stands or through moving it elsewhere in the city.
