North Canton school site under scrutiny; district says it's safe

NORTH CANTON On an unseasonably warm November afternoon, children run, swing and shout on a playground across the street from a daycare center. 

Nearby, four people carry red and white signs emblazoned with a skull and crossbones and the world contaminated. "No school construction," the signs urge.

The 9.6-acre site on Charlotte and Ream Streets NW currently houses parking lots, a playground, sports fields and the Mary L. Evans Early Childhood Center.

North Canton City Schools want to turn the site into a new approximately 108,038  square-foot school that would house about 900 students in preschool through second grade.

The district hired Intertek PSI, an engineering and testing firm, to do an environmental study.

The firm took samples of soil, soil gas and shallow groundwater. The study, released in August, found evidence of TCE above the screening level for a residential or school building.
