'At long last': EPA wraps last cleanup phase at CTS Asheville Superfund Site on Mills Gap

After years of process and technical cleanup at the CTS of Asheville Inc. Superfund Site on Mills Gap Road, the EPA is now waiting and checking to make sure it's working.

That kicked off work that began in earnest in 2017 with electric resistance heating, which heated the groundwater and vaporized the TCE to remove it.

The next phase, In-Situ chemical oxidation, was completed in March 2020, a series of injections of potassium permanganate into the ground to oxidize and break down TCE into carbon dioxide and water.

Between December 2019-March 2020, the EPA says approximately 350,000 pounds of the chemical have been injected 55-90 feet below the surface via 76 injection wells, and should take 3-5 years to reduce the TCE by 95% in local groundwater.
