DEC: Little Valley TCE contamination no longer a public health threat

LITTLE VALLEY — After more than 30 years the state Department of Environmental Conservation has declared groundwater contamination between Little Valley and Salamanca no longer presents a significant threat to public health or the environment.

The contaminant trichloroethylene, or TCE, a degreaser, was discovered in well water at homes and commercial buildings along Route 353 in 1990. The TCE levels were high enough to warrant the installation of filters on dozens of homes in the corridor.

The state’s Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Site program has reclassified the 8-mile long site as class 4, which “no longer presents a significant threat to the public and/or the environment.”
