Superfund to treat groundwater beneath old Chromatex plant in Valmont By Kent Jackson Hazleton Standard Speaker (PA) February 27, 2024 Federal Superfund money will pay to vaporize and treat a cancer-causing liquid that lingered beneath a former upholstery plant in Valmont Industrial Park for decades. The Valmont TCE site in West Hazleton and Hazle Twp. is among 25 sites that will share $1 billion in new funds for cleanups, the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday. Money comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Just off Jaycee Drive in a warehouse now owned by Karchner Logistics, an upholstery company called Chromatex used to treat fabric with strain repellent. The stain repellent contained trichloroethene or TCE, which causes cancer.
