Wichita City Council takes next step for 29th and Grove contamination testing

WICHITA, Kan. - Expanded access to testing for people possibly affected by contamination from a decades-old chemical spill at the Union Pacific railyard near 29th and Grove is one step closer to reality. 

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Wichita City Council approved $125,000 toward a match needed to access state funds for testing. It’s for a strategy in development to provide short and long-term testing of people who live or have lived in the impacted area of northeast Wichita and whose health may be impacted by the spill.

The Wichita City Council’s action on Tuesday leaves a need of $875,000 after the State of Kansas put up $2.5 million last April to support more testing. However, $1 million of that requires a local match. 

Wichita City Council Member Brandon Johnson said the city, Sedgwick County, health clinics, Kansas Health Foundation and the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita developed the plan for expanded testing.
