EPA reaffirms link between cancer-causing chemical and Exide plant activities The agency also said that if Exide got a Superfund designation they would keep investigating other harmful chemicals in the area. by Alfredo Santana Los Angeles Public Press (CA) March 5, 2025 The Environmental Protection Agency reaffirmed last Wednesday at a community meeting that the presence of a toxic chemical at the site of the former Exide Technologies plant is linked to operations at that location. TCE is a synthetic, colorless liquid originally developed as an anesthetic that evaporates at room temperature. The National Cancer Institute lists the chemical as causing kidney cancer, with other evidence suggesting it may be linked to liver cancer as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The EPA is considering whether the presence of TCE and other chemicals and substances found at the Exide plant would qualify the site for a designation known as a Superfund. The term refers to a law originating in the 1980s that authorizes the EPA to clean polluted industrial sites, as well as force parties at fault for the toxins to clean their properties or pay the government for remediation work. … For the entire article, see https://lapublicpress.org/2025/03/exide-toxic-superfund-cleanup/ — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
