Pease competes for bid on new tanker

PORTSMOUTH - Pease International Tradeport faces some stiff competition
in attempting to attract Airbus to locate a new facility to build the
new tanker plane, the KC-330.

EADS North American, the American-based operation of the European
Aeronautics Defense and Space Co. would spend $600 million to build a
1.5 million-square-foot facility if the U.S. Air Force ultimately
accepts the plane for service.

About 70 applications from 32 states were received. The company hopes to
narrow the list to maybe a dozen in the next few weeks.

An analysis by Darryl Jenkins, a visiting professor at Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University in Florida, gave the edge to the Gulf Coast ports.

In an article posted to the Site Selection Online Web site, Jenkins said
West Coast facilities are out because of the increased shipping time
from Europe. He said East Coast ports are confined by tight space.
