Towns can rebound after base closingsBy Michael Hooper Topeka Capital-Journal (KS) May 4, 2005 The closure of a military base has a devastating effect on a community, taking away jobs, payroll and commerce. However, some bases, including Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, have successfully redeveloped. By May 16, the Pentagon is expected to release a list of military installations recommended for the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process. Kansas' four military bases -- Forbes Field, McConnell Air Force Base, Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth -- are among those being considered for closure or consolidation. ...
