Life After BRAC - Something for Officials to Think AboutSavannah Business Report May 6, 2005 Local government officials should evaluate what the likely reaction would be to a base closure before the list of installations proposed for closure is released. That's the advice Katy Podagrosi, the mayor of Rantoul, Ill., the former home of Chanute Air Force Base, gave the editors of the Association of Defense Communities for a recent newsletter. Chanute was designated for closure in 1988. Rantoul was not anticipating that Chanute would be on the 1988 list, and so Podagrosi did not sit down with other elected officials, the head of the county economic development organization, representatives of the business community and a member of the news media until the day after the announcement. For Podagrosi - who served as mayor from 1984 to 1996 - the priority was providing an outlet for people who wanted to save the base as well as for those who were ready to start thinking about life after Chanute. ...
