Subject: | [CPEO-IRF] California dodges major BRAC impact |
California, the state most impacted by previous base closure rounds, has
appeared to have dodged most of the bullets this time around. The
Defense Department's recommended BRAC list, if approved, would lead to a
net reduction in 2,018 civilian jobs and uniformed military positions.
The biggest job losses would be realignments at the San Diego Naval
Medical Center (1,630) and the Ventura Naval Base (1,534). However, San
Diego's Naval complex seems likely to gain as many positions as it
loses, and the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station, considered
vulnerable to closure, would actually gain 2,469. Other major California bases consider possible closures before the list came out, such as the Los Angeles Air Force Base, Beale Air Force Base, and the Monterey Naval Postgraduate School, were not on the list.
