Ease pain of base closings by cleaning contaminated sites By REGISTER EDITORIAL BOARD Des Moines Register May 17, 2005 The Pentagon last week recommended closing more than 30 military bases and a realignment that would cut 29,000 jobs. The closures and job losses will cause economic pain, in some cases severe. Yet the restructuring is a necessary step toward saving tax dollars while also modernizing the military. To help ease the pain, Congress must ensure that environmental contamination at closed bases is cleaned up and that the sites are quickly returned to local use, something that hasn't necessarily happened with previous closures. ...
