Stratford's latest round of base closings proposed by defense officials are singing a sad but familiar refrain FRANK WASHKUCH JR. Connecticut Post May 22, 2005 STRATFORD - As far as many town officials are concerned, those howling in protest over the latest round of base closings proposed by defense officials are singing a sad but familiar refrain That's because it's been a decade since Stratford has been singing the blues after the Army shut down the sprawling tank engine manufacturing plant on south Main Street. Since then, the once-proud defense complex has been almost entirely unused, and the town only recently began negotiating for a so-called "early transfer" of the site to local control. The 79-acre property, the site of aircraft manufacturing during World War II and later shifted to making turbine engines for Army tanks, encompasses nearly 60 buildings ... Town officials continue to express concern that the levels of contamination left behind by years of manufacturing on the site will take years to clean up. They also are frustrated over the lack of progress in redeveloping the property. "It's like a ghost town when you come into Lordship by the empty factory," said Councilwoman Jennifer Hillgen-Santa, R-1, whose district contains the factory. "It is frustrating for the community because we still want to see some kind of development there." ...
