Area revitalization may be key to Fort Sam planBy W. Scott Bailey San Antonio Business Journal (TX)/MSNBC May 29, 2005 Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's recommendations for the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) could lead to an investment in Fort Sam Houston by the federal government rivaling Toyota's plans for the South Side. Those recommendations also may force the city to create a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the blighted avenues surrounding the massive Army post. On May 13, Rumsfeld recommended closing Brooks City-Base and 32 other installations across the nation as part of the 2005 BRAC process. He also recommended several base adjustments, including the relocation of the 59th Medical Wing from Lackland's Wilford Hall Medical Center to Fort Sam Houston, where it would be merged with Brooke Army Medical Center as part of a new San Antonio Regional Medical Center. ...
