Moffett Fields huge blimp hangar is an extreme and unusual example. - LS] Navy to study four ways to clean landmark hangar By Jessica Portner San Jose Mercury News (CA) June 14, 2005 Nearly two years after the dome that once housed the West Coast's first dirigible was sealed, the U.S. Navy on Monday presented several options -- ranging from a thorough scrub-down to demolition -- for removing toxic substances from Hangar One. The 200-foot-high Mountain View landmark was given a coat of sealant in 2003 to prevent toxic chemicals -- including polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs -- discovered in the structure from washing into the groundwater. At an open house at Moffett Field, Navy officials, who are responsible for cleaning up the cavernous white and black shell, presented four possible alternatives to the public. "We know there's a strong desire to keep us as a usable public building," said Rick Weissenborn, who heads the Navy's remediation effort at Moffett Field. "We have to evaluate all the alternatives." ...
