Sub Base Contamination Tests Taking On Added Significance Cleanup requirements are weighed against Pentagon closure plan By JUDY BENSON New London Day (CT) June 30, 2005 Groton- To most of the camera-toting tourists visiting the Nautilus museum Wednesday morning, the parking lot they crossed to get to the main attraction probably seemed fairly ordinary. Ordinary, that is, except perhaps if they noticed Fred Santos and Robert Tess hovering over a melon-sized hole in the pavement at the far end from the museum building. Santos and Tess, geologist and project manger, respectively, for Environmental Chemical Corp., a Navy contractor, are regular visitors to this and other sites at the Naval Submarine Base, where the museum is located. Their purpose, though, involves a far less glorious aspect of sub-base history than is depicted in the museum displays. ...
