[The Groton cleanup estimated by Connecticut's regulators, reported below, is more than the bluster of an angry politician - frequently heard in base closure communities. It is based upon careful analysis of the Sub Base site. - LS] McCarthy: Navy's Cost Estimate For Sub Base Cleanup Far Too Low By JUDY BENSON New London Day (CT) July 7, 2005 Boston - The costs of cleaning up and closing the Naval Submarine Base in Groton are likely to be nearly four times higher than the Navy has estimated, state and local officials told the U.S. Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission on Wednesday. During brief testimony before the commission, state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Gina McCarthy estimated it will cost the Navy $132 million to complete all the work necessary to close the base and fully decontaminate it of pollutants. The Navy has put the costs at about $23 million for cleanup and about $10 million for closure expenses. ...
