Subject: [CPEO-IRF] Regulators' estimate of Groton (CT) cleanup costs
[The Groton cleanup estimated by Connecticut's regulators, reported
below, is more than the bluster of an angry politician - frequently
heard in base closure communities. It is based upon careful analysis of
the Sub Base site. - LS]

McCarthy: Navy's Cost Estimate For Sub Base Cleanup Far Too Low

New London Day (CT)
July 7, 2005

Boston - The costs of cleaning up and closing the Naval Submarine Base
in Groton are likely to be nearly four times higher than the Navy has
estimated, state and local officials told the U.S. Defense Base Closure
and Realignment Commission on Wednesday.

During brief testimony before the commission, state Department of
Environmental Protection Commissioner Gina McCarthy estimated it will
cost the Navy $132 million to complete all the work necessary to close
the base and fully decontaminate it of pollutants.

The Navy has put the costs at about $23 million for cleanup and about
$10 million for closure expenses.
