Pentagon defends Air Guard changes By Lolita C. Baldor Associated Press /Boston Globe July 15, 2005 WASHINGTON --The Pentagon on Friday stood by its plans to shut down or shift nearly 30 Air National Guard units, despite legal questions from the independent commission reviewing the military base closings. Lawyers for the Base Closure and Realignment Commission produced a memo saying the use of the base closure law to relocate, disband or move Air Guard units from one state to another could be beyond the commission's authority. Defense Department spokesman Glenn Flood s aid Friday that the Justice Department plans to issue its own legal ruling on the matter. "We respectfully ask the commission to refrain from revising or eliminating any of the department's recommendations until it has received the opinion," he said. ...
