Arsenic tests show impact at Red Cove but not town wells By Don Eriksson Pepperell Free Press (MA) July 15, 2005 DEVENS -- Biological laboratory data from sediment samples taken from the bottom of Plow Shop and Grove ponds indicate significant ecological impact to Plow Shop Pond's Red Cove from the arsenic present in groundwater and from Shepley Hill landfill, according to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report released to the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB). The data will become part of a final ecological risk assessment to be given the Army Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) team in September for its further action. Both ponds were formed by a series of dams installed in the 19th century that backed water up onto meadow land underlain by peat bogs. When BRAC work began in the early 1990s, the ponds generated interest because of potential contamination to the Ayer municipal water supply near Grove Pond. ...
