Fort Ben Harrison, another story of BRAC '91By Don Eriksson Groton Landmark (CT) August 5, 2005 DEVENS -- The conversion of Fort Benjamin Harrison, a former Army base near Indianapolis, Ind., and a sister to Devens in the base realignment and closure (BRAC) of 1991, is enjoying a resurgence different from the Devens experience but with enough shared history to make a comparison worthwhile. Both Army camps began life in the days prior to World War I. They supported training camps and military schools for decades. Both faced closure at least twice before demilitarization in the mid-1990s, and both are home to an Army Reserve Center that has recently been on the defense department hit list. Both former military bases have seen their brick officer's housing converted to private homes, and both have planned historic districts. Streets at Devens are named for famous battles. Streets at Benjamin Harrison are named for individual soldiers. That is roughly where the similarity ends, however, for while both are guided by a reuse plan, their geo-political circumstances are entirely different. ...
