disposition. - LS] At last, hope for reuse of Badger plant By Scott De Laruelle Baraboo News Republic (WI) August 8, 2005 PRAIRIE DU SAC - Dividing 7,354 acres at the decommissioned Badger Army Ammunition Plant has not been a quick or easy process, but Saturday's gathering at the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center farm celebrated a welcome first step. Last September, the U.S. Army turned over 1,943 acres of the plant to the federal Department of Agriculture to be used by the farm, and about 50 people turned out to officially commemorate the acquisition. "We're celebrating the first step in the agricultural reuse of Badger," said Steve Piotrowski, assistant to U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., who credited local officials and area residents for sticking with a land distribution process that likely will continue for some time. The USDA is the first entity to receive land from the plant in a land distribution process that has inched along for several years, in part due to questions about lingering contamination. The Ho-Chunk Nation and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also are expected to receive land as part of the distribution process. Farm manager Rick Walgenbach said he looks forward to collaborating with both entities when their lands are transferred. ...
