Cleanup, transfer of property take time DEP's case manager says environmental work well under way Asbury Park Press (NJ) BY TODD B. BATES August 25, 2005 Assuming the Army's Fort Monmouth is closed as recommended by a federal panel Wednesday, it would take years to finish cleanup work there and transfer ownership of the property. Still, "the environmental conditions at the site won't hinder in any way site reuse" at the main post or Charles Wood areas of the base, said Gregory Zalaskus, case manager in the state Department of Environmental Protection. Forty-three "areas of concern" were identified at the fort, which also had nine landfills for household waste that cover a total of 33 acres, according to Fred Mumford, a DEP spokesman. The landfills need to be capped, Zalaskus said. ...
