Subject: | [CPEO-IRF] Air Force closure plans gutted |
The BRAC Commission has not published the results of its Friday and Saturday votes yet, but from various press reports it appears that the Air Force's plan to transform the deployment of aircraft across the country has been gutted The Commission voted not to close Air National Guard units in Portland (Oregon), Niagara Falls (New York), Great Falls (Montana), and Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). It also voted not to mothball Eielson Air Force Base, in Fairbanks (Alaska). However, it did approve the closure of Air National Guard bases in Milwaukee (Wisconsin) and Houston (Texas). Earlier I reported that the Commission refused to close Ellsworth Air Force Base (South Dakota), and it decided to mothball, rather than close, Cannon Air Force Base (New Mexico). It also approved the closure of Otis Air National Guard Base (Massachusetts) and the Connecticut Air Guard facility at the Hartford-Springfield airport. The Commission did approve a number of realignments that include the transfer of aircraft from one base to another, but there will be relatively few Air Force/Air Guard closures.
