Battle plans already in the works for post-BRAC base siteBy JOHN SURRATT The Mississippi Press August 29, 2005 PASCAGOULA -- Round two of BRAC has begun. The Base Realignment and Closure Commission last Wednesday did what most local officials and residents secretly expected and feared. It closed Naval Station Pascagoula, which has been a fixture in the community since 1985, when the Navy announced its decision to base a homeport on the Mississippi Coast. Advertisement The plans to develop Singing River Island as a multi-use economic engine for Jackson County began as the Singing River Island Diversification Committee began preparing battle plans to keep the naval station open. When the commission handed down its decision, the committee members were ready to move ahead. ...
