BNAS closure to impact retirees, will change makeup of community Rachel Ganong Brunswick Times Record (ME) September 30, 2005 BRUNSWICK - When the Base Realignment and Closure commission voted in August to close Brunswick Naval Air Station, Harry Rich, Ralph Dean and Van McCullough mourned the loss of a strategic military base for their nation. But the decision also affected them personally - as military retirees. When the base closes, they will neither use the Navy Exchange, dental clinic or other services the base offers retirees nor introduce their younger Navy comrades to an area they've chosen to call home. Retired Rear Adm. Harry Rich said even though he's a Maine native, if it weren't for the presence of BNAS he would never have experienced "the total blending of the college, military and community" in Brunswick. He's lived about everywhere from Nagano, Japan, to Corpus Christi, Texas, but Brunswick still tops his list. ...
