Solar plan for hangar deemed impractical SHADED BUILDING WOULD NEED COSTLY PANELS By Jessica Portner San Jose Mercury News (CA) October 25, 2005 NASA officials said Monday they were disappointed that their vision to wrap Moffett Field's historic Hangar One with a solar-paneled skin that would generate power for thousands of homes seems doomed. The angle of the 200-foot-high landmark that once housed a dirigible means the Mountain View icon would be partially shaded, and the special panels required to coat it would be too expensive, according the only company that bid on the project to turn the hangar into the largest solar-powered building in the state. "It's disappointing," said Sandy Olliges, NASA's director of environmental safety and mission assurance. "We just thought we would try it and see what happens. It's not worth anybody's while to do it." ...
