Communities around Fort Benning prepare for 28,000 new residents JEFFREY McMURRAY Associated Press/Macon Telegraph (GA) November 11, 2005 WASHINGTON - Phenix City, Ala., figures to grow as much in the next four years as it has in the previous 50. Right across the Georgia state line in Columbus sits Fort Benning, projected to be one of the nation's top job gainers as a result of the base closure process that became official last week. With the Army's Armor School and Center moving from Fort Knox, Ky., to Benning, the two-state area is expected to inherit more than 28,000 new soldiers, contractors and families - just under a 10 percent overall increase. That has sent communities such as Phenix City scrambling to get ready. ...
