Local residents express concerns at BRAC public information panel

The meeting, co-sponsored by the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens' Associations and Mount Vernon Council of Citizens Association, was a discussion on how thousands of new employees on the installation will affect the surrounding community, especially traffic flow.

About 40 local community members attended the meeting. Panelists included Gerry Hyland, Mount Vernon district supervisor; Lee Marshall, Fort Belvoir’s BRAC implementation team leader; Virginia Department of Transportation representative Jan Vaughn; and Dan Storck, Mount Vernon School Board member.

Hyland said traffic congestion is already a problem on Route 1, but an increased personnel population on post can only exacerbate the daily gridlock. He emphasized that transportation improvements are necessary to help facilitate the commute of this new workforce. He said BRAC on Fort Belvoir "cannot work unless those improvements are made.
