Tribute work set to begin Riverfront Park to be transformed by Navy memorial BY WARREN WISE Charleston Post and Courier (SC) July 2, 2006 Fourth of July visitors entering North Charleston's Riverfront Park this year will not see the same park this time next year. That's because next year the long-awaited Navy base memorial will be in the throes of construction at the park's southern end, which also serves as the park's entry point. Officials plan to break ground on the $2 million addition beside the fountain later this year, start building in early 2007 and finish within 10-12 months, Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial Committee Chairman Ed Fava said. The 2.5-acre addition will include bronze sculptures of a ballistic missile submarine, a landing craft and a destroyer-type vessel, the three vessels most associated with the sprawling former Navy base. The base was the centerpiece of life in North Charleston from 1901, when the first tracts of old plantation land were bought for the Navy, to 1995, when the base fell victim to closure at the end of the Cold War. ...
