HOMESTEAD Cleanup project reaches the end After 13 years of environmental cleanup at the former Homestead Air Force Base, the Air Force is ready to hand over the last section of a 601-acre land parcel to the county. BY EMILY YEHLE Miami Herald (FL) July 30, 2006 With the completion of an environmental cleanup, the last 24 of 601 acres at the former Homestead Air Force Base soon will be transferred to Miami-Dade County, ending a 13-year struggle to put the land to some public use. The journey has been marked by political controversy, public protest and lots of bureaucracy. Most of the former base was once earmarked for a controversial airport that would have hosted 150,000 commercial flights a day. That plan died in 2001 amid pollution concerns for nearby Everglades National Park, forcing Miami-Dade County to propose more environmentally friendly development. But before the Air Force could turn over the land, a slew of agencies had to deem it environmentally safe. That meant the removal of underground fuel tanks and chemical spills, accomplished after piecemeal approval from differing bureaucracies. ...
