Kelly cleanup may get a whole lot costlier
The cost of cleaning up a polluted shallow aquifer below the former Kelly AFB and thousands of surrounding homes and businesses could skyrocket in the wake of a national science panel's report that found a strong link between kidney cancer and a widely used solvent. Trichloroethylene, or TCE, was used to degrease metals at Kelly and countless other military bases and industrial sites across the country. The Air Force already has spent $320 million to clean up TCE and several other pollutants beneath Kelly. But the findings could lead to much stricter cleanup standards, which is what health advocates long have been clamoring for. ...
