Tri-Town wants to buy 384 acresBy Ed Baker Weymouth News (MA) September 6, 2006 South Shore Tri-Town Development Corporation wants to buy 834 acres of land at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station from the Navy, but both groups must agree upon the cost of cleaning up contaminants in the soil before the parcels are sold. "All of this is in negotiations," Tri-Town Executive Director Terry Fancher told the News on Aug. 31. "Since day one, this issue has been about environmental cleanup. That does not mean the Navy or LNR Property Corporation must pay 100 percent of the cleanup. That will be a negotiating point with the Navy." Fancher said ongoing negotiations between the Navy and Tri-Town preclude him from mentioning price proposals. Tri-Town is responsible under state law for overseeing the redevelopment of the base by LNR Property Corp. LNR has an 11-year plan to redevelop the base by building a mix of condos, townhouses, recreational facilities, and a commercial complex. ...
