Alamedans to meet on housing project
Toxic control agency wants residents' input on proposed pollution prevention system

ALAMEDA - The state's toxic control agency invites the public tonight to comment on city plans for an interim toxic-prevention solution. The project involved: affordable housing units on petroleum-contaminated soil at the former Navy supply center near College of Alameda.

Referred to as the "39-unit affordable housing" project, the $14.3 million plan includes three two-story buildings surrounding a courtyard with a teen center and a raised-bed vegetable garden.

A year after the Navy closed the center in 1998, contaminants were found in the soil and a groundwater plume at the site.

Since then, the Navy has cleaned up the soil but has yet to treat groundwater from which benzene and naphtalene migrated into the soil. The contaminants are carcinogens known to cause health problems, including cancer, if inhaled, especially in enclosed areas.
