County could get Army site by June Bonneville - Munitions still litter the ex-military training camp, which the county wants to make into a park
VANCOUVER -- Perhaps as early as June, the U.S. Army expects to hand over a munitions-studded former military training site, five miles east of the city limits, to Clark County. For about a year, the county has anticipated the transfer of Camp Bonneville, but the targeting of a specific month is a significant step in a lengthy process that has been 11 years in the making. The transfer has been repeatedly delayed, partly because of an unknown amount of unexploded howitzer shells and other munitions littering the 3,800-acre site, which was used for training between 1909 and 1995. County officials say a four- to five-year cleanup plan, costing the federal government about $25 million, can eventually make the expanse safe as a public park. Nevertheless, continuing revelations of ordnance and chemical contamination -- even after 11 years -- has prompted opponents to say the government is acting hastily. ...
