Tax break district for BNAS endorsed
Redevelopment zone wins unanimous support of legislative committee.

AUGUSTA ? A legislative committee Thursday gave its unanimous support for a
special base redevelopment zone that will give tax breaks to compensate for
the negative economic impact expected to result from the closure of
Brunswick Naval Air Station.

If approved by the full Legislature, the special zone, modeled after
existing Pine Tree Zones, will allow local officials to offer tax breaks as
enticements for new businesses to locate in the Brunswick area.

"This is a huge win for us," said Rep. Charles Crosby, D-Topsham, who
sponsored the compromise that won the support of the six Republicans and
seven Democrats on the Business, Research and Economic Development
Committee.
