Future of fort remains on hold Some Richmond lawmakers wonder why they should let Hampton lead plans to redevelop Fort Monroe. BY KIMBALL PAYNE Newport News Daily Press (VA) March 11 2006 HAMPTON -- Fort Monroe will have to wait until next year. Major questions still loom over the beachfront Army post that is slated for closure, and much of the state debate over the future is leaving town as lawmakers pack up this weekend in Richmond. ... The Army isn't expected to leave until 2011, but residents, lawmakers and developers have been talking about how to reshape the fort since it was officially tabbed for closure last fall. Plotting the future is uniquely difficult at Monroe because the post is littered with unexploded ordnance and historic buildings, has decaying flood protections and is entangled in shadowy deeds that make it unclear who is going to be in charge of the next step. ...
