Phoenix considers link with Gateway airportArt Thomason and Justin Juozapavicius The Arizona Republic March 28, 2006 Phoenix took the first major step Monday in joining the authority that operates Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa. The move would give Phoenix a big say in how Williams Gateway can become a safety valve as a reliever airport for increasingly congested Sky Harbor International Airport. It would also help Mesa, which fears it may have to cut its subsidy to Williams Gateway $2 million because of city financial problems. Gateway, in far east Mesa, 28 miles from Sky Harbor, has been converted from an Air Force base over the past 13 years and will start its first regularly scheduled commercial air service April 6 when Vision Air of Las Vegas will offer flights to North Las Vegas Airport. ...
