Runway contract extended

WASHINGTON--The state and U.S. Air Force have agreed to continue extra 
maintenance on Galena's runway through Oct. 1. They also have an 
understanding to extend the work through October 2008.

The Air Force had canceled its contract with the state, which provided 
the extra maintenance, as of March 31. The Air Force took the action 
following a congressional decision to close the Galena "forward 
operating location," as recommended by the Base Realignment and Closure 
Commission last summer.

The Air Force had been covering the cost of five state employees who 
kept the runway up to standards for military fighter jets.
