Jacksonville Facing Deadline to Get Cecil Ready to Reopen
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- The City of Jacksonville is facing a December deadline to get Cecil Field ready to reopen as a Navy base. In a report released Wednesday, the Pentagon's Inspector General said the city of Virginia Beach has not met demands to stop and reverse development crowding in Naval Air Station Oceana. Last year, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission ordered that city to take a series of steps to control development around the master jet base at NAS Oceana, or risk losing it. According to Wednesday's report, the city failed to meet one of those marks. The announcement opens the door back up to the possibility of Cecil Commerce Center as the Navy's solution -- even though Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton doesn't want it. The door is now wide open to bring around 200 jets and 12,000 jobs to the First Coast. ...
