Military reserve base in city to be closed
WARWICK -- The Army's Lloyd S. Cooper III Reserve Base, a fixture on Sandy Lane for about a half-century, will be closed within four years, and the 5.2-acre complex has been offered to the city either for its own use or for resale to a developer. The base is home to the 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion, which will be moved to a planned facility at the Newport naval base. Operations of the Bristol Army Reserve Center and of the Harwood Army Reserve Center, in Providence, also will be reassigned to the new Newport facility. While the actual turnover of the Cooper base, at a price to be set by the Army Corps of Engineers, might not occur before 2010, the city is already mulling possibilities for the property, which includes a two-story brick, 26,000-square-foot building, a maintenance shop and a garage. ...
