NAS Atlanta gets new lease on lifeAtlanta Business Chronicle October 19, 2006 The Georgia National Guard will take over the 107-acre Naval Air Station (NAS) Atlanta property in Cobb County following the facility's closure as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Committee (BRAC) decision. Gov. Sonny Perdue, U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) and U.S. Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) made the announcement jointly on Oct. 19. The NAS property is next to Dobbins Air Reserve Base and its airfield operations, which officials said will be an advantage for the Georgia National Guard and its ability to train for and respond to national and state emergencies. The NAS property will become home base for 1,500 National Guard soldiers. The announcement comes at a time when the Georgia Guard is forecasting growth with plans to form several new units in the coming years. In fiscal 2006 the Georgia Army National Guard included more than 10,000 soldiers -- its highest level in the past decade. Georgia's National Guard now ranks in the top 10 states in terms of size. ...
