Slow cleanup delays Hunters Point project

With plans for a Candlestick Point stadium and development all but dead, some residents are worried about the future of another project billed as a bonanza for the Bayview -- a community for thousands of people at the old Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

Lennar Corp., the developer that would have worked on the stadium project with the 49ers, still plans to build 1,600 homes on the shipyard, once an economic engine for the neighborhood but now a badly polluted Superfund site. However, delays in toxic cleanup have led to uncertainties about when offices, stores, parks and possibly more housing planned for the 500-acre base will be built.

The company also has decreased the number of rental units and increased the number of for-sale condominiums, citing economic pressures that have cut into Lennar's bottom line.
