Base panel makeup still disputed

Disagreement may be delaying federal funding

The two-county argument about who should decide how to reuse Naval Station Ingleside will continue Friday.

The members of the Coastal Bend Redevelopment Planning Committee will meet at 8 a.m. at the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center to consider who should serve on the committee. The issue is how many members should be from Nueces County or San Patricio County government entities, plus the Port of Corpus Christi, which owns most of the base land.

The two counties have been wrangling since last year, shortly after closure of the Navy base was announced. The committee currently includes nine members from San Patricio and Nueces counties, Corpus Christi, Ingleside, the Port of Corpus Christi and related business and industry. It was established to serve as a funnel for federal funds to offset economic losses expected when the base closes by 2010.
